Short answer

A lease lets you use a car for a monthly fee and usually return it at the end; “lease to own” adds a buy-out. Rent-to-own gives you the option to buy the car at the end for a small fixed price (R5,000 at YeboAuto), with no balloon. Leases normally need a good credit record; rent-to-own approves on income.

What “lease to own” means in South Africa

Many providers use “lease to own” and “rent to own” for the same thing. Ask one question: is there a residual or balloon at the end? If there is, you pay a big lump sum to keep the car. YeboAuto has none.

The YeboAuto deal

Eight promises the others won’t put in writing.

We read every complaint about rent-to-own in South Africa: surprise fees, balloon payments, cars stuck at the workshop while the debit order keeps running. Then we wrote the opposite into our deal.

Every rand, upfront

Weekly amount, deposit, term, the price to buy it at the end, and where every rand goes: the vehicle, insurance, service, licence and our margin. Your price card is locked in writing for 7 days.

No balloon: a small, fixed buy price

At the end you can buy the vehicle for a fixed price written into your agreement on day one: R5,000 for a car, R500 for a bike. No R40,000 surprise.

Buy it early if you want

Had a good season? Ask for an early buy-out quote and own it before the term ends. Most rent-to-own deals make you sit out the full contract.

FAQ

Straight answers

Is a lease cheaper than rent to own?

Monthly payments on a lease can be lower because you don’t pay for the whole car. But at the end you own nothing unless you pay the residual.
