Rent to own as a foreign national

Updated 2 November 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

Foreign nationals can rent to own with a valid passport, a permit that allows them to work in South Africa, a driver’s licence that is valid here, proof of address and proof of income. For e-hailing and delivery work, the platforms also check your permit, and since 2026 they ask for extra declarations.

What you’ll need

  • Passport
  • A valid permit that allows you to work (work, business, critical skills, or other permits that allow employment)
  • A driver’s or motorbike licence valid in South Africa
  • Proof of address
  • 3 months of bank statements, or your delivery/e-hailing app earnings

See delivery bikes for riders with valid permits and cars for foreign national drivers.
