Rent to buy vs rent to own: is there a difference?

Updated 2 November 2026 · 4 min read

Short answer

No, not in itself. In South Africa “rent to buy”, “rent to own” and “rent and own” are different names for the same idea: you rent a vehicle for a fixed term and can own it at the end. What differs from one provider to the next is the contract: how you become the owner, the end payment, what is included and the full price.

Same idea, different names

Search for a car without bank finance and you will see “rent to buy”, “rent to own”, “rent and own” and sometimes “lease to own”. Providers pick the name they like, and the name alone doesn’t tell you how the contract works. All of them describe a deal where:

  • You pay a deposit and then a fixed weekly or monthly amount
  • The provider owns the vehicle during the term
  • At the end, you can become the owner

So don’t choose a provider because of the name. Choose on the contract.

What actually differs: the contract

Check Why it matters
How you become the owner Some agreements transfer the car after the last payment; others give you an option to buy it for a set price. Ask which one, in writing.
End payment A small fixed buy price is very different from a balloon of tens of thousands of rand.
What’s included Insurance, tracker, service and licence inside the weekly amount, or extra?
Kilometre limit Everyday deals often cap kilometres; e-hailing needs much more.
E-hailing allowed? Many consumer deals don’t allow Uber or Bolt at all.
Early buy-out Can you own it before the term ends, and what does it cost?
Full price Weekly × weeks + deposit + fees + end payment.

Our rent-to-own contract checklist goes through each of these in detail.

How YeboAuto’s version works

YeboAuto uses a fixed-term rental agreement with an option to buy:

  1. You pay a deposit when you collect (from R995 on a bike, from R7,500 on a car).
  2. You pay a fixed weekly amount that includes insurance, tracker, service plan and licence.
  3. At the end of the term, you can buy the vehicle for a fixed price written into the agreement on day one: R5,000 for a car, R500 for a bike.
  4. Had a good season? Ask for an early buy-out quote at any time.

Ownership does not pass automatically; buying at the end is your choice. Read how rent to own works for the full process.

Questions drivers ask

Is rent to buy the same as lease to own?

They are close. “Lease to own” is often used for finance-style leases with a residual or buy-out at the end, which usually need a good credit record. Read the contract to see which one you are signing.

Is rent to buy a loan?

A rent-to-buy or rent-to-own agreement is normally a rental, not a loan or vehicle finance. That is why providers can approve on income and affordability instead of only your credit record.

How does YeboAuto's agreement work?

It is a fixed-term rental with an option to buy the vehicle at the end for a fixed price written into the agreement on day one: R5,000 for a car, R500 for a bike. There is no balloon.
